What Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?
There are two different types of hardwood constructions: solid hardwood floors and engineered hardwood floors.
- Solid hardwood planks have a simple and uniform construction. They are made from a single piece of premium wood, such as maple, oak, hickory, birch, mahogany, walnut, and other species. Each plank is typically ¾’’ thick and can be refinished repeatedly through the decades. This process restores the floors by eliminating blemishes and scratches and adding a new protective finish. Solid hardwood is ideal for on or above-grade rooms that are dry and climate-controlled, such as living rooms and bedrooms.
- Engineered hardwood floors are constructed by laminating multiple layers of composite wood together. At the top is a real hardwood veneer, so these floors are identical to solid wood from the surface. This construction stabilizes the planks and protects against moisture and foot traffic. There’s less risk of your hardwood planks warping, cupping, buckling, gapping, and having other issues when exposed to a few spills or humidity. Just like solid wood, engineered hardwood can also be refinished, though usually not as many times. Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed on any level of your home – that includes basements.
Regardless of the type of hardwood you choose, we can promise that we have what you are looking for. We have options that reflect traditional styles as well as options that reflect current trends.
Where Can Hardwood Flooring Be Installed?
Hardwood flooring is recommended for home settings where there isn't significant foot traffic and moisture.
Popular spots for hardwood floors are bedrooms and living rooms. Solid hardwood is limited to being installed on or above level and should only go in relatively dry, climate-controlled spaces.
Engineered hardwood, however, can be installed on all levels of your home, including in finished basements. It can also stand up to a moderate amount of foot traffic, as well as light moisture in hallways, foyers, and laundry rooms.
